On 20th October 2024, VIEWS-India, in collaboration with the Odisha Association for the Blind (OAB) and supported by DKBW, organized a remarkable Foot Rally at the OAB Conference Hall (near Mother Teresa Road) to commemorate White Cane Day. This event aimed to raise awareness about the freedom, independence, and equal rights of the visually impaired community in Odisha. The rally saw the enthusiastic participation of over 300 blind and visually impaired individuals from various parts of the state, coming together to advocate for their rights and recognition.
In addition to visually impaired individuals, representatives from government departments, local NGOs, disability activists, and volunteers participated in the event, showcasing a strong alliance in support of the visually impaired community. A key highlight of the day was the distribution of white canes to blind and visually impaired people, empowering them with this vital tool that symbolizes their independence and mobility.
Following the rally, a consultation session was organized to address the pressing issues faced by the blind and visually impaired population in Odisha. The discussions provided a platform for participants to voice their concerns and share experiences. As a key outcome of this consultation, a memorandum detailing the issues and necessary actions was prepared and submitted to the Government of Odisha under the banner of the Odisha Association for the Blind.
The white cane, far more than a mere tool for navigation, symbolizes empowerment, resilience, and the courage to lead a life without limitations. The rally served as a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing the white cane as a beacon of hope and independence for visually impaired individuals. It emphasized the need for society to continue breaking down barriers to ensure that every person can live with dignity, confidence, and complete freedom.
